What is Banana Pudding?

The first mention of banana pudding seems to be from 1878 in a New York Times column called “Information Wanted, the first recipe appears to be from Good Housekeeping in 1888.

Banana pudding is a classic Southern dessert made with layers of vanilla pudding (or custard), sliced bananas, and cookies—most commonly vanilla wafers (like Nilla Wafers). It’s usually topped with whipped cream or meringue and served chilled.

There are a few ways to make it:

  • Traditional: Using a homemade custard cooked on the stovetop.

  • Quick and easy: Using instant pudding mix combined with milk and whipped topping.

  • Baked version: Topped with meringue and baked briefly to brown the top.

The dessert is sweet, creamy, and comforting, with the banana slices adding a fresh, fruity flavor that pairs perfectly with the soft, cake-like wafers.
